Pharmacology & Compliance & FDA Issues for the IBCLC (SU)
Goal
Describe ethical/legal imperatives that guide the IBCLC in her roles and responsibilities as related to pharmacology and toxicology.
Objectives
- Briefly explain why many FDA-approved drugs (prescribed or over-the-counter) carry a warning that the drug should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers without their physician’s approval.
- Briefly explain the “old” FDA labeling for drugs in pregnancy and lactation, and the “new” labeling.
- Explain what is meant by using an “off-label” drug.
- Describe roles and responsibilities for preserving the breastfeeding relationship if the IBCLC does not hold a state license or prescriptive privileges.
- Name at least 5 medications that are commonly prescribed “off-label” for lactating women.
