Review:
Below is a list of some of the more popular off-label medications for lactating women.
Generic name | Brand name | Approved to treat… | Off label |
Bromocriptine | Parlodel | Parkinson’s disease | Dry up milk |
Domperidone | Motilium | Emesis | Increase milk supply |
Metformin | Glucophage | Diabetes | Increase milk supply |
Metoclopramide | Reglan | Nausea, vomiting, reflux | Increase milk supply |
Nifedipine | Procardia | Blood pressure; chest pain | Nipple vasospasm (“Raynaud’s” syndrome) [LM1] [MB2] |
Note that in the US, we haven’t used Parlodel since about the 1990s as far as I can remember, and I’m not even sure if it’s FDA approved at this point. But the exam is international, and it is my understanding that it is still approved and used in other countries. Therefore, it is “fair game”. I’m not saying you will get a test item on it, I’m saying, be prepared for anything!
Nipple vasospasm is technically not Raynaud disease, since Dr. Raynaud considered only fingers (and maybe toes) but people do say that, so I wanted to point it out.
